KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Jackson County judge sentenced a Kansas City man to four decades in prison Tuesday following a fatal shooting of a woman and her unborn child.

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said 35-year-old Emmett C. Williams was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison after pleading guilty in June to two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action.

Court documents said Williams told police he shot 22-year-old Shayla Curts in the head inside a residence in the 4900 block of Bellefontaine Avenue.

The shooting happened on Dec. 6, 2022, and resulted in the death of Curts and her unborn child. Williams told police Curts often antagonized him with her words and he normally ignored them but he used a 9mm handgun to shoot her as he walked past her sitting on the couch during the incident.

Williams was given 25 years in prison Tuesday for the murder convictions and 15 years on the armed criminal action convictions.
