NEW YORK CITY (KCTV) - Former Kansas State guard Serena Sundell will tip off her WNBA career in Seattle.

The Storm chose the Maryville High School alum with the 26th overall pick in Monday night’s WNBA Draft. It was the first pick in the third round.

Sundell was among the 15 players invited to attend the event at The Shed in Manhattan’s Hudson Yards but fell in the draft well past where many mock drafts expected her to be selected.

She’s just the ninth player in Kansas State history to be selected in the WNBA Draft and the only one selected this year after her teammate, Ayoka Lee, announced her retirement from basketball at the end of this season.

Sundell finished her career with school records in career starts (139), games played (139) and career assists (811). She’s also sixth on the Wildcats’ all-time scoring list with 1,771 points, and ranks seventh in career blocks (104).

As a senior, Sundell led the nation in assists per game. She was the only player in the country this season to record 500 or more points, 250 or more assists and shoot 50% or better from the field.

Sundell helped power the fifth-seeded ‘Cats to a Sweet Sixteen appearance this season, marking their deepest postseason run in 23 years.
