KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - On Thursday morning, the Kansas City, Missouri Mayor and City Council are meeting virtually to discuss ‘personnel matters’, and KCTV5 Investigates is told this is regarding City Manager Brian Platt and his indefinite paid suspension.

The Mayor and some City Council members confirmed the meeting plans with KCTV5 on Wednesday.

According to the meeting notice, this is a closed special session on Thursday at 9 a.m. over Zoom.

Earlier this month, Chris Hernandez, the former City Communications Director, was awarded more than $900,000 by a Jackson County Jury. The trial centered around Hernandez’s claim that Platt suggested the staff ‘lie to the media’ in a 2022 meeting.

Hernandez said he pushed back and was eventually demoted and then left after feeling pushed out.

A day after the verdict, the Mayor suspended Platt with pay. He makes $308,000 a year.

Last Thursday, the City Council and Mayor voted to suspend Platt indefinitely.

After that vote, Mayor Lucas told KCTV5 he expected a resolution in a matter of days instead of weeks or months.

While Platt is still getting paid, Mayor Lucas said it is about making sure due process is followed and the process is fair.

KCTV5 Investigates has requested multiple City emails through public records requests to learn more about the process leading up to Platt’s suspension. When these are released, a report will be made.

KCTV5 Investigates will cover the meeting and talk with council members after on Thursday.
